Each of NAH’s nationally-known instructors has extensive clinical experience which validates and furthers the use of classical homeopathy in today’s health care environment. They bring students new understandings of the remedies by sharing their professional experiences. Our faculty has helped set the standard in the profession nationally and worldwide.
Eric Sommermann, PhD, RS Hom, Dean, received an MSc and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He was engaged in biomedical cancer research but became devoted to homeopathy when he discovered it in 1983, attending the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy shortly thereafter. His scientific background has enabled him to create and offer a balanced curriculum which integrates the natural and human sciences with a holistic, homeopathic viewpoint. In founding the Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy, Sommermann put into place training standards which exceed the worldwide standards set by the International Council on Classical Homeopathy (ICCH). His focus is to develop curriculum and teaching styles which encourage individual students to develop their own talents and become competent and successful practitioners of classical homeopathy.
Valerie Ohanian, RS Hom, CC Hom, has 19 years of extensive clinical experience as well as special training in gestalt and feminist psychotherapy which provides students with a practical, contemporary understanding of Materia Medica. Ohanian met Sommermann when they were the only two non-medically-licensed students to attend the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Albany, California, where she later became an associate faculty member. She has an A.B. in Journalism from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. Ohanian is the American representative and past chairwoman of the International Council of Classical Homeopathy. She serves as Assistant Dean of the Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy.
Sommermann and Ohanian are full-time homeopathic practitioners with Homeopathic Practitioners, Ltd. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Professionally, they were instrumental in founding the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH), Ohanian serving as Vice President for 5 years and Sommermann as Registrar, President and Board Chair for 7 years. They have also been key founders and officers in the Minnesota Homeopathic Association, an organization which promotes homeopathy as a safe and effective health care choice for Minnesotans and is committed to serving and supporting the community of Minnesota’s professional homeopaths.
Laurie Dack, RS Hom, has been a full-time homeopathic practitioner in Vancouver, BC since 1979. Dack brings a wide-ranging cultural wisdom to her practice of homeopathy. She has traveled extensively and studied homeopathy in India, Greece, England and Switzerland. She has developed an unusually in-depth style of case taking and a unique understanding of remedies, informed by her love of mythology, which she readily shares with students. Dack is also a faculty member at the Vancouver Homeopathic Academy and has published numerous case studies.
Karim Adal, MD, MS earned an MD from the Indiana University School of Medicine, has an MS in Epidemiology from the University of Virginia and is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. Adal was involved in patient care, education and clinical research at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio for five years before joining Homeopathic Practitioners, Ltd. as a homeopathic practitioner. He is uniquely qualified to teach the human sciences from a homeopathic perspective for the Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy.
Michael Quinn, R.Ph., is President and Chief Pharmacist at the Hahnemann Laboratories, Inc. in San Rafael, California. He has a B.A. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI and a B.S. in Pharmacy from Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR and has taught at the University of California School of Pharmacy, San Diego Program and the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Berkeley, CA.
